Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements for your program?
Have graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program in the past 18 months;
Possess an active, unencumbered nursing license in Alabama;
Be Family Nurse Practitioner board-certified BEFORE Sept 1
What is the applicant selection process like?
The Program Director, along with the Associate Program Director and any support staff, review all applications, select interview candidates, and contribute to the final decision for each position offered. The final decision for each offered position is made by the Program Director, in association with approval from the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Cahaba Medical Care.
Do you require residents to live within a certain distance of Cahaba?
We require all residents to live within 30-45 minutes of their assigned Cahaba clinic
Are NPResidents guaranteed a job post-residency?
No. However, if a position within the company is available upon graduation, Cahaba administration highly values candidates such as a graduated NPResident. For example, a potential employee would be considered highly qualified if they were acutely familiar with things such as company culture, company policy / procedures, and the electronic medical record- all of which tend to be inherent in NPResident Graduates.
What year did your NP Residency start?
Jan 2018. We have graduated 21 NP residents during this time-frame.
How many residents do you take each year?
We take between 4-6 NPResidents each cohort.
How long is the program and when does the program year start?
Our 15-month program starts in the first part of October each year, and ends the following December just prior to the New Year.
What is collaboration structure like?
Daily there is an MD or DO assigned to collaborate on medical questions. There is also an APP Site mentor assigned at every CMC location as well as an Program mentor assigned to each resident for additional support.
What is the salary for a NPResident? And are benefits included?
$75,000 + benefits included (health insurance, CME, etc.)
QI
In accordance with curricular goals, and in conjunction with Cahaba’s Quality Assurance department, NPResidents complete one Quality Improvement project during the program year. We believe all healthcare providers should be “change agents”, and our quality project reflects this vision.
Is Cahaba-NPR accredited?
In July 2022, our training program underwent a rigorous process and site-visit, subsequently receiving full-accreditation from the Consortium for Advanced Practice Providers. We are scheduled to undergo re-accreditation again in 2025. This process holds us to rigorous education standards that must be maintained and accounted for each year.
What will my year as a Nurse Practitioner Resident (NPR) look like?
A NPR can expect to go through orientation and shadowing the first month that they are with CMC.
After that they will slowly ramp up from seeing 1 patient per hour, 2.5 days per week to 4 patients per hour, 4.5 days per week over the course of the year. The first 12 months of the program you will also participate in mentored clinics, precepted clinics, specialty clinic rotations, workshops, didactic opportunities and more. The last three months of the residency you work as a NP, in a continuity clinic full time - with the continued support of the residency and collaboration opportunities.
